National Science Foundation Director Sethuraman Panchanathan shared his concerns that delayed government funding could put the U.S. behind in the global technology race.
The foundation is an independent agency that distributes 25 percent of all federal funding to research facilities in the United States, and the CHIPS and Science Act approved an $81 billion budget increase for the agency over the next five years. Though the funding was approved, it does not guarantee that it will be distributed in a timely fashion, especially given the current budget debates in Congress.
Director Panchanathan said that technological innovation simply cannot happen without the funding necessary to give American researchers an edge over key global competitors, particularly China. “The time is now,” he stated. “This is an important moment not to cede leadership in any emerging technologies.”
